Project Overview
- Property Type: Apartment (3-Bedroom)
- Location: Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur
- Project Duration: Half Day
- Fans Installed: 3 Ceiling Fans (replacing light fixtures)
- Warranty: 12 Months Parts & Labour
The Client's Situation
A young couple who had recently moved into their apartment in Kuchai Lama reached out to us with a common problem—their unit came with basic ceiling light fixtures in all three bedrooms but no ceiling fans. With Malaysia's year-round heat, relying solely on air-conditioning was driving their TNB bill up to RM400+ per month.
They wanted ceiling fans installed in the master bedroom and both secondary bedrooms, but weren't sure if it was possible without major rewiring. The apartment had standard concrete slab ceilings with basic light point wiring at each location—a straightforward setup for conversion.
What the client wanted:
- Replace all 3 bedroom ceiling lights with fans that have built-in LED lights
- Remote control operation (no additional wall switches)
- Quiet operation for sleeping comfort
- Budget-friendly solution under RM2,000 total
Our Approach
Site Assessment
We visited the apartment to inspect the ceiling structure and existing wiring at each light point. The concrete slab ceiling was in excellent condition—no false ceiling complications, and adequate height (2.8m) for standard fan mounting. Each light point had proper live, neutral, and earth wiring running back to the DB box, making the conversion straightforward.
Fan Selection
Based on the client's budget and room sizes, we recommended KDK 56-inch ceiling fans with integrated LED light panels and remote control. These fans are popular in Malaysian apartments for good reason: they're quiet (under 35dB on low speed), energy efficient (65W motor), and the remote control means no extra wiring is needed for separate fan/light switching.
Installation Process
Our team arrived at 9 AM and completed all three installations by 1 PM. Here's what we did at each point:
- Power isolation: Switched off the relevant circuit breakers at the DB box and verified zero voltage with a multimeter
- Light fixture removal: Carefully disconnected and removed each existing ceiling light, including the lightweight mounting bracket
- Fan bracket installation: Drilled new anchor points into the concrete slab using 10mm expansion bolts, then secured the heavy-duty fan mounting bracket
- Wiring connection: Connected the fan's power cable to the existing wiring (live, neutral, earth) using proper cable connectors
- Fan assembly and mounting: Attached fan blades, LED light panel, and remote control receiver, then hung the assembled fan on the bracket
- Testing: Tested all three fan speeds, LED light function, remote control range, and checked for any wobble or vibration
⚡ Why Remote Control Fans Are Ideal for Conversions
When converting a light point to a fan, using a remote control fan eliminates the need to run additional wiring for a wall-mounted fan speed controller. The existing single switch simply acts as the main power supply, while the remote handles fan speed and light control. This saves both time and money on the installation.
Results
Before
Basic ceiling light fixtures only. No air circulation. Heavy reliance on air-conditioning. Monthly TNB bill exceeding RM400.
After
3 ceiling fans with LED lights and remote control. Comfortable airflow in all bedrooms. Air-con usage reduced by half. Immediate electricity savings.
✅ Project Results
- Completion Time: 4 hours (half day)
- Fans Installed: 3 × KDK 56" with LED light + remote
- Total Project Cost: Under RM1,800 (fans + installation)
- Estimated Monthly Savings: RM100–RM150 on electricity
- Warranty: 12 months on all parts and labour
- Additional Wiring Required: None (remote control solution)
Client Feedback
"We didn't think it would be this easy! The Prime Electrician team came in the morning and by lunchtime all three fans were up and running. The best part is we didn't need any extra wiring—the remote control handles everything. Our first TNB bill after the installation dropped by over RM100 because we're not running the air-con all night anymore. Really happy with the result."

Why This Project Matters
This Kuchai Lama project is a perfect example of how a simple electrical upgrade can make a big difference in daily comfort and monthly expenses. Many apartment owners across KL don't realise that converting existing light points to ceiling fans is quick, affordable, and doesn't require any hacking or major rewiring.
If your apartment or condo only came with basic light points and you've been putting up with the heat (or paying through the nose for air-con), a light-to-fan conversion could be the most practical upgrade you make this year. It's a job that pays for itself within a few months through electricity savings alone.
