The Challenge
Mr. and Mrs. Tan had just moved into their newly renovated 2-storey bungalow in Setia Alam. The renovation contractor had completed all the electrical rough-in work, but the ceiling fans were not part of the package. They reached out to us to install 5 ceiling fans throughout the house—3 in bedrooms and 2 in the living areas.
The challenge? Each location had different ceiling heights, and the homeowners wanted a mix of fan styles—standard blade fans for bedrooms and a premium 5-blade model for the main living room. They also wanted each fan on a separate circuit with individual wall switches for better control.
Our Assessment
During our initial visit, our electrician inspected all 5 mounting locations and reviewed the existing electrical setup. Here's what we found:
- Living room ceiling was 12 feet high—requiring an extension rod
- Master bedroom had a reinforced concrete ceiling—special mounting hardware needed
- All locations had fan points roughed in, but wiring was daisy-chained on a single circuit
- No dedicated switches—fans would share circuits with lights
We recommended running dedicated circuits from the distribution board to each fan for better load management and independent control. The homeowners agreed, understanding this would prevent the fans from affecting their lighting and allow for future smart home integration.
Project Scope
5 Ceiling Fans
3 bedrooms + 2 living areas
5 Dedicated Circuits
Independent power for each fan
5 Speed Regulators
Wall-mounted fan controls
1 Extension Rod
For high ceiling in living room
The Solution
Our team of two electricians completed the installation in about 4 hours. Here's how we approached each challenge:
1. Running Dedicated Circuits
We ran new 2.5mm² cables from the DB to each fan location, installing individual 6A MCBs for protection. This allows each fan to operate independently without affecting other circuits.
2. High Ceiling Installation
For the living room's 12-foot ceiling, we used a 60cm extension rod to bring the fan to optimal height (approximately 8-9 feet from the floor). This ensures maximum air circulation while keeping the fan safely out of reach.
3. Concrete Ceiling Mounting
The master bedroom's reinforced concrete ceiling required heavy-duty expansion anchors rated for dynamic loads. We used M8 concrete anchors capable of supporting well over 100kg to ensure the fan remains secure even at high speeds.
4. Wall-Mounted Regulators
Instead of pull chains, we installed 5-speed wall regulators at convenient heights near room entrances. This gives homeowners precise speed control without reaching for the fan.
The Result
All 5 ceiling fans were installed, tested, and operational within a single morning. We balanced each fan to eliminate wobble and verified that all regulators provided smooth speed transitions. The homeowners now have efficient air circulation throughout their home with professional, reliable electrical work backing it up.
Very impressed with the work! The team was punctual, tidy, and explained everything clearly. They even showed us how to properly maintain the fans. Much better than trying to coordinate with our renovation contractor—these guys specialize in electrical work and it shows.
