The Client's Situation
The homeowner—a working professional who had recently moved into a mid-range condo in Ara Damansara—reached out to us about her kitchen lighting. Like many Malaysian condos built in the early 2010s, her unit came with a single fluorescent tube light in the kitchen ceiling. It was the standard 4-foot T8 fluorescent fitted during handover, and after more than a decade it had started flickering and producing a dull, yellowish light.
The kitchen was an enclosed galley-style layout, about 2.4 metres wide and 3.6 metres long. With only one centrally placed fluorescent tube, the countertops along both walls were in shadow whenever anyone stood at them. Chopping vegetables, reading recipes on a phone, and even checking whether meat was properly cooked had become daily frustrations.
She wanted brighter, more even lighting throughout the kitchen—particularly over the countertops and stove area—without a full renovation. Her budget was modest, and she needed the work done quickly since she worked from home and used the kitchen daily.
What We Recommended
After visiting the unit and inspecting the existing wiring and ceiling, we proposed a two-part lighting upgrade:
Part 1: LED Downlights for General Illumination
We recommended replacing the single fluorescent tube with six 12W LED downlights (4000K neutral white) arranged in two rows of three across the kitchen ceiling. The condo's kitchen already had a basic plaster ceiling with about 12 cm of clearance—enough for standard recessed LED downlights. This layout would eliminate the shadowing problem by distributing light evenly across the entire kitchen.
Part 2: Under-Cabinet LED Strip Lighting
For dedicated task lighting over the countertops, we recommended LED strip lights installed beneath the wall-mounted cabinets. These aluminium-profile LED strips (4000K, 12W per metre) would illuminate the countertop surface directly from above, providing bright, shadow-free light exactly where it's needed most—for food preparation, cooking, and cleaning.
⚡ Why 4000K Colour Temperature?
We chose 4000K (neutral white) rather than 3000K (warm white) or 6500K (daylight) because it strikes the best balance for kitchens. It's bright enough for accurate food preparation and colour recognition, but not so harsh that it feels clinical. Most Malaysian homeowners find 4000K the most comfortable for kitchen use.
Installation Process
We completed the entire project in a single day, working around the homeowner's schedule:
Morning: Assessment and Preparation
- Isolated the kitchen circuit at the DB box and confirmed zero voltage
- Removed the existing fluorescent tube fitting and ballast
- Mapped out downlight positions—three per row, spaced 1.2 metres apart, offset 60 cm from the walls
- Marked and cut six 68mm holes in the plaster ceiling using a hole saw
Midday: Wiring and Downlight Installation
- Ran new 1.5mm² wiring from the existing ceiling point to each downlight location above the plaster ceiling
- Connected all six downlights in parallel to the existing switch circuit
- Used spring clips to secure each downlight flush with the ceiling
- Tested each fixture individually before proceeding
Afternoon: Under-Cabinet Strip Lighting
- Installed aluminium LED strip profiles beneath both runs of wall cabinets (total length: approximately 4.8 metres)
- Wired the strips to a dedicated switch near the kitchen entrance
- Added a frosted diffuser cover for even light distribution and to prevent direct glare
- Routed all visible wiring neatly along cabinet edges using matching cable clips
Results
Before
Single flickering fluorescent tube. Dark shadows on countertops. Uneven, yellowish light. Poor visibility for food preparation.
After
Six LED downlights with even ceiling coverage. Bright under-cabinet task lighting on both countertops. Clean, neutral white illumination throughout.
✅ Project Results
- Completion Time: 5 hours (single day)
- Downlights Installed: 6 × 12W LED recessed downlights
- Strip Lighting: 4.8 metres of under-cabinet LED strip with aluminium profile
- Energy Usage: Reduced from 36W (fluorescent) to 72W (downlights) + 58W (strips) — but now lighting the entire kitchen properly, not just the centre
- Colour Temperature: 4000K neutral white throughout
- Warranty: 12 months on all parts and labour
Client Feedback
"Honestly, I didn't expect such a big difference. My kitchen feels like a completely different room now. The under-cabinet lights are my favourite part—I can finally see what I'm doing when I'm cooking at night. The team was punctual, tidy, and finished everything before my evening Zoom call. Very happy with the result."

Why Kitchen Lighting Matters More Than You Think
This project is a good example of how a relatively simple electrical upgrade can dramatically improve daily life. Kitchens are one of the most-used spaces in any Malaysian home, and yet they're often the most poorly lit—especially in condos and apartments where developers install the bare minimum during construction.
Good kitchen lighting isn't just about aesthetics. It's about safety (seeing clearly when handling knives and hot surfaces), hygiene (spotting spills and properly cleaning countertops), and even enjoyment (making cooking feel less like a chore). For anyone living in the Ara Damansara, Damansara Perdana, or wider Damansara area, this kind of upgrade typically costs between RM800 and RM1,500 depending on the number of fixtures and existing wiring.
If your kitchen still relies on a single fluorescent tube from when the unit was handed over, it might be time for an upgrade. The technology has improved enormously, the costs are reasonable, and the difference is immediate.
