The Need
With more people working from home than ever before, Mr. Kevin Lee found himself facing a common problem. His spare bedroom in Kuala Lumpur had become his permanent home office, but the room's original electrical setup wasn't designed for this purpose.
The room had only two power outlets - far from enough for his dual-monitor setup, laptop, printer, router, and other office equipment. He was using multiple extension cords and power strips, which created a messy tangle of cables and posed potential safety risks.
The Challenge
When we visited Kevin's home office, we quickly understood the issues:
- Insufficient outlets: Only 2 wall outlets for 8+ devices
- Extension cord overload: Daisy-chained power strips - a fire hazard
- No dedicated circuit: The room shared a circuit with the adjacent bedroom
- Poor placement: Outlets were on the wrong side of the room from the desk
- No USB charging: Phone and tablet charging required additional adapters
Work-From-Home Reality
Many Malaysian homes were built before remote work became common. Bedrooms typically have minimal electrical outlets, designed for a lamp and maybe a phone charger - not a full office setup with computers, monitors, and networking equipment.
Our Solution
We designed a comprehensive upgrade to transform Kevin's room into a proper home office:
New Dedicated Circuit:
First, we added a dedicated 15A circuit from the DB board specifically for the home office. This ensures that Kevin's work equipment has stable, reliable power without affecting other rooms or being affected by high-draw appliances elsewhere in the house.
Strategic Outlet Placement:
- 4 new double outlets behind the desk area - exactly where needed
- 2 outlets with built-in USB-A and USB-C ports for device charging
- 1 outlet near the door for the printer
- All outlets at desk height for easy access
Clean Cable Management:
By placing outlets directly behind the desk, we eliminated the need for extension cords running across the floor. All power connections are now neat, organized, and out of sight.
For kitchen spaces specifically, check out our kitchen lighting upgrade in Ara Damansara for inspiration on how proper electrical upgrades can transform any room.
The Installation
We completed the upgrade in a single day:
Morning Session:
- Ran the new dedicated circuit from the DB board
- Installed a new MCB in the panel for the home office circuit
- Routed cables through the ceiling void to the room
Afternoon Session:
- Cut openings for new outlet boxes at the planned locations
- Installed and wired all new outlets
- Connected USB outlets with proper transformers
- Tested all installations
- Patched and touched up the wall where needed
The Result
Kevin's home office now has professional-grade electrical infrastructure. He can plug in all his equipment directly into wall outlets - no more extension cords or power strips. The USB outlets provide convenient charging for his phone and tablet without using additional adapters.
Most importantly, the dedicated circuit means his work equipment runs on stable, protected power. No more worrying about the circuit tripping when someone turns on the air conditioner in the next room.
Professional Home Office
A proper electrical setup is the foundation of a functional home office. With adequate outlets in the right places and a dedicated circuit, Kevin can work productively without electrical limitations or safety concerns.
Home Office Electrical Tips
Based on this project, here are some recommendations for anyone setting up a home office:
- Count your devices: List everything that needs power - you'll likely need more outlets than you think
- Avoid daisy-chaining: Multiple power strips connected together is a fire hazard
- Consider a dedicated circuit: For heavy equipment use, a separate circuit provides reliability
- Plan outlet placement: Outlets behind the desk keep cables organized
- USB outlets: Save adapter space with built-in USB charging
- Surge protection: Protect your equipment from power spikes
Customer Satisfied
"Finally, my home office has proper electrical. No more extension cords everywhere. The USB outlets are a nice touch too. Very happy with the work!"
